All About Jazz review Simin Tanders CD "Wagma"

The following review of Simin's CD "Wagma" has just been published on the All About Jazz website

"Vocal improvisation rarely strays far from scat, so it's something worth celebrating when a voice emerges with a distinct vocabulary. Afghan/German singer/composer Simin Tander is such a voice, and her debut is an intriguing offering of compositions sung in English, Spanish and her own, striking improvisations. Backed by a piano-led jazz trio which is both sympathetically supportive and subtly dynamic, Tander's instantly appealing voice, and uncommon approach to vocal jazz—within a modern jazz quartet setting—makes for compelling listening."

Mingus on Mingus

A documentary about a grandson’s journey through the lore and legends of jazz history to find his grandfather, Charles Mingus.

Mingus on Mingus is a documentary of a grandson discovering the truths behind the legend of the grandfather he never knew. Known to the world as a composer who left one of the largest musical legacies of the 20th century, the film highlights the voices of the people he touched and the places he lived.  While following the search for a grandfather and a true jazz legend, we rediscover both, the man and the artist: Charles Mingus.

“There are many perspectives of my grandfather that have not had a place in defining his legacy… I am seeking them out to understand him beyond myth, fable or a singular vision of his work. We have begun to create a platform where we can use the ideals of jazz in the art of making a film”   – Kevin Ellington Mingus.

This feature length documentary will include interviews with legendary musicians including among others Sonny Rollins, Joni Mitchell, Ornette Coleman and Charles McPherson. The documentary will be filmed in locations ranging from India to New York to the Mingus Mill located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the only remaining landmark of the Mingus family settlement.
